A backlit ceiling is not a big lamp. It is a luminous surface, and surfaces obey different rules: they set the mood of the entire room, they cast almost no shadows, and any mistake in the engineering is visible from every seat in the house. Here is how we plan them.
Rule One: Pitch Equals Depth
Hotspots — visible rows of bright dots — happen when LED strips sit too far apart for the cavity depth. Our working rule: the distance between strips must not exceed the distance from strip to membrane. A 10 cm cavity needs strips every 10 cm or closer. Shallower voids cost more strip metres; that is simply the physics, and any quote that ignores it will glow like a barcode.
Rule Two: Pick Temperature by Task, Not Trend
- 2700–3000K (warm): dining rooms, lounges, bedrooms — flattering to skin and timber.
- 4000K (neutral): kitchens, wardrobes, retail fitting rooms — honest colour without harshness.
- 5000–6000K (cool): task zones, clinics, product displays — crisp, but tiring as a whole-room setting.
- Tunable white: our default recommendation. The same panel serves breakfast at 4500K and dinner at 2800K.
Rule Three: Choose One of Three Layouts
The full field turns the whole ceiling into light — spectacular in windowless rooms, but plan a dimmer, because full brightness is genuinely daylight. The island is a glowing rectangle centred on the key furniture piece; it anchors dining tables and beds beautifully. The perimeter ribbon runs a lit border around a matte or gloss centre, adding height without dominating — the most economical of the three.

Drivers must live in an accessible pocket, never sealed in the void; ours unclip behind a magnetic hatch. Ask for flicker-free drivers if anyone films or video-calls in the room. And in Malaysian roof spaces, driver heat matters — we derate loads for hot voids so the electronics live as long as the membrane above them.
